Setting ideas in motion.

Words, at 25 frames per second, for Never Sit Still.

Never Sit Still hero image

Never Sit Still is a design and animation studio in Sydney, and they’re among the best in the game. We’ve been delighted to write scripts for a number of their creations, including two videos that describe what they do – and how they do it.

Approach

“Writing for motion design” is an exercise in brevity. How can we get across everything that needs to be said, in a very limited timespan?

We’re also thinking about how it will look. Are there visual or aural hooks in the language that the motion designer can use? How’s the rhythm, the pacing?

Working closely with the team at NSS ensured plenty of bouncing back-and-forth on the big ideas, while a master list of mandatories meant no details were missed.

Scripts for Never Sit Still

Writing for a studio’s internal comms is a great privilege … and a great responsibility. We drew upon our understanding and appreciation of motion design, branding, and process.

Scripts for NSS clients

We’ve worked with NSS across a range of external clients too – bringing the same attention to brevity, rhythm, and visual thinking to each brief.

These videos also have a number of points to get across, and the information can be technical, or dense. We’ll wrap our heads around the product or service to get a thorough understanding of what they’re communicating. That comprehension allows us to simplify for the medium of motion, without losing that all-important info that the audience needs.

When writing radio scripts for Spotify, I came up with a character called Future Shane. Sadly, he didn’t make the cut.

Happily, you get to enjoy a demo of Future Shane, below. Features my vocals and, um, sound effects.
